Bryan King. Bryan says: Hi thanks for this challenge, had to think about this approach, didn't have a pure sepia pigment but was able to come close I think. The photo I used isn't mine but was taken in the early 1900s - it is of Normanby village in North Lincolnshire. Normanby is the estate village for Normanby Hall, and my mother's family lived in the village and worked either in the Hall or on the estate for many generations. My great grandfather lived in the cottage on the right.

his painting by new member Colin Ricardo: See attached my attempt to produce a sepia painting….as I thought back to my days in the late1960s printing photographs in a make shift darkroom, I often would use instant coffee and water to get a sepia effect on my prints. So the image below maybe not to everybody’s taste and possibly inappropriate, was a quick pencil drawing on wallpaper and “painted" with diluted instant coffee.

A Sepia picture was our challenge this week and it’s bought about some evocative pictures – this one is by Paula Hill and is of her long missed Westie called Dolly

A Sepia picture was our challenge this week and Jean Taylor says “I don't have any sepia, so used burnt sienna to try to copy a photo I took in April. The early morning sun was shining in a window and a mirror opposite reflected the colour back onto the wall next to the window. It isn't quite what I wanted, but here it is”

After this week’s phenomenal rainstorm Chairman Jean set the challenge of “Keeping Dry with Friends” … and no I don’t think she was referring to the temperance society! This is Jenny Taylor’s group huddling up against the elements.

“Keeping Dry with Friends” … Andy Wright practiced the lessons learned from our weekly tutorial by using sponge to paint two lovely groups of loosely painted people sheltering from the elements.

Our challenge this week was to produce a facemask design – Andy Wright has done two versions … I love the pottery one but was somehow expecting ceramic teeth!

image

Our challenge this week is a sunrise or sunset – Chairman Jean Maxwell says “Sunset in the canal. Credit for the picture goes to Tim Clarke, known to me from my boating days and painted with permission, also seen in BBC weather!”

Our challenge this week is a sunrise or sunset – Cathy Woodhead – picture 1 watercolour!

IMG_20210611_214513

Our challenge this week is a sunrise or sunset – Jean Taylor says “My granddaughter took a beautiful photo from her rooms in Catherine Hall, Plymouth Uni, she's on the 13th floor, in March. This is a feeble copy of the photo. We're off to collect her tomorrow, first year completed.

IMG_1104

Our challenge this week is a sunrise or sunset – Bryan King says “I've been meaning to tackle this subject for a while - so thought that this week's challenge of painting an interesting sky would be a great opportunity. This is titled - "Ely Cathedral Sunset". Such an impressive structure, visible for miles over the flat fens with those wide skies!”

D141DB983E58462BB0783431EB34F7DD

Our challenge this week is a sunrise or sunset – Andy Wright says “After I’d painted the sky for this week’s challenge I had some paint left overt and thought that I would use it up and ‘do’ a sky on a small box canvas. I’m not sure how I will finish the painting but it will probably end up with some sort of boat on it.”

864A5B83FC5940A2A7463AF8D7C32B46

Our challenge this week is a sunrise or sunset – Andy Wright says “This ‘morning sky’ took me a lot longer to do this week.”

717E4F13A0114C918DBB93F9AC76EF25

Our challenge this week is a sunrise or sunset – Stephen David says “Here is my submission for this week’s challenge, which was a sunset. It’s a watercolour. Somehow the colours don’t come out as strongly as in the painting. It may be something to do with taking the photo out of doors on a bright day, but am never sure of the best time of day or condition’s to use.”

DA7B5CDF60204F27864C0D2AF77E9AC3

A rare Andy Wright failure? Or perhaps a depiction of “Pottery Throwdown”

23D45C588C2C4C25A87EC566A976ABC8

Stephen David says “because I like the great outdoors and wildlife I did this picture of Chris Packham which slightly appealed to me. I am not sure what to make of him, as one does not expect naturalists to be celebrities”

IMG_1098

Bryan King says “one of my favourite TV programmes is the detective series "Vera". Set in Northumberland I really enjoy the complex plots and well worked characters. Added to this are the stunning locations - particularly the Northumberland coastline - so I hope this painting of Bamburgh Castle meets the brief.

image

Jean Maxwell has been enjoying I different farming programmes, especially Our Yorkshire Farm, and Escape to the Farm. This is a more local scene but represents what I enjoy about the programmes

Anne Ledgley 1

Anne Ledgley made this Green Man.

Anne Ledgley

Anne Ledgley also made the four seasons - versions of the Green Man.

Jean Maxwell

Jean Maxwell painted this using the image sent in by Bryan King from Norwich Cathedral (see Bryan's entry this week).

Cathy woodhead

Now this is a dragon...but came too late for me to add last week. The beautiful dragonfly is by Cathy Woodhead.

Paula Hill

By Paula Hill. Paula says: Here is my submission for this weeks challenge. Girls dancing around a maypole! Although I had an idea of what I wanted to achieve subject wise, the colour scheme kind of evolved into a more contemporary colour way with an ethereal style. On A3 landscape in acrylics.

Stephen David

Stephen David says: I have known several pubs called The Green Man, and they do good wholesome food, so I have always associated the Green Man with food.

Jenny Taylor

Jenny Taylor produced this lively image .

Jean Taylor

Jean Taylor says: I couldn't cope with a maypole, so they danced around a tree.

Bryan King

Bryan King says: I've submitted a photograph for this week's challenge rather than a painting. A character long associated with May Day is Jack-in-the-Green (often referred to as the Green Man), a symbol of rebirth and renewal. Although believed to be pagan in origin, the Green Man appears in many religious buildings including this 14thC roof boss from the cloisters of Norwich Cathedral. Photographed by me a few years ago.
