Colin Ricardo

My interest in photography started when I was about 8 years old. My father had been a keen amateur photographer after he left the RAF in the late 1940s.

I remember helping him in his makeshift darkroom processing and printing films. As a young child in the 1950s it was a magical experience seeing the print suddenly appear in the developing dish in the dimly red-lit room.

By the time I was at secondary school I was a competent photographer and knew how to use a “proper” camera with manual settings and focus.

When I left school I was lucky enough to work in the record industry which gave me the opportunity of photographing singers, pop groups and entertainers, I went freelance and took on assignments which covered sports, press and commercial work.

In the 1990s when digital photography was in its infancy I had the opportunity of working for Fujifilm who were developing a professional DSLR camera system. Looking back on it now I realised it changed my outlook on photography and I stopped using my cameras almost as a protest for the declining film market.

When I retired about 5 years ago I rekindled my passion for photography and thought of new ways of seeing and photographing objects / subjects. So here are a few of my images, archive work and current offerings. I would like to end with a big thanks to my father who ignited that photographic spark in me all those years ago.
